October at The Laundry Garden

Dear friend,

The switch has been flicked, shifting us into one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, Autumn! Easing us in with its gentle lower light levels, magical sunrises, and, best of all, the kaleidoscope of colours cascading across the landscape and garden, making this month truly theatrical.

My two youngest sons were born 12 months apart at the beginning of Autumn, giving me the chance to spend most of my maternity leave outdoors, pushing them through fields and woodlands while soaking in the stunning scenery. We visited enchanting gardens that sparked my creativity and inspiration. During this time, I truly came to appreciate October, as it allowed me to pause and embrace the moment.

In this month’s blog in collaboration with Genus Gardenwear, I share some simple tasks, including why I’m sowing sweet peas now instead of in spring, as well as tips on what I’m doing with my dahlias. Click here to read more.

STAR PLANT OF THE MONTH

Hesperantha coccinea ‘Major’

Crimson Flag or Schizostylis

Hesperantha coccinea 'Major'

This is such an excellent late season performer that will go on flowering until the early frosts. I felt this deserved to be the star plant this month as this beautiful, elegant, low growing, iris-like flower cheers up the front of some borders in our garden throughout October, and is well worth having as a cut flower. This Hesperantha has graceful, coral coloured flowers that last well in a vase. You can buy it here.
