Dear friend,
As the weather cools and the leaves continue to change colour and fall, my mind focuses on what needs to be done for the next two seasons. I embrace the longer evenings, as they give me a chance to make lists and plans.
Since returning from my visit to Boston, I’m eager to fill the garden with even more Maple and Cornus trees to maximise the autumn drama! I was particularly drawn to the bright yellow Gleditsia (honey locust) trees, which were almost everywhere like shining beacons—a must for my tree wish list! Another standout was the majestic lime green Ginkgo Biloba trees that I admired daily as we walked to Luke’s accommodation on campus.
One place I highly recommend for autumn colours is the Mount Auburn Cemetery near Cambridge, which boasts a wonderful collection of mature trees, some dating back to 1831 when the cemetery was established. I’m sure there are hundreds more equally beautiful spots, and I hope to return to explore more.

STAR TREE OF THE MONTH

Crab Apple
The first time we came across this tree was at the garden of Arne Maynard, who is a well-known UK landscape designer. It’s a beautiful small/medium tree that produces beautiful small crab apples during autumn, that make delicious jelly. In the spring, there’s a wonderful mass of cup shaped white blossom from dark pink buds. We have planted ours in a circle and pleach-trained them. You can buy it here.
