Dear friend,
What colour do you associate Spring with? I asked Tom this yesterday and his first answer was yellow, then blue! Of course, we tend to think immediately of bright yellow Daffodils, soft yellow Primroses, Bluebells and Muscari. For me, it’s white. I’m not sure if this is because I want a continuation from the snowdrops, or that the sheer pureness lifts me whenever I see it and echoes throughout our garden, especially during Spring! Two of the first flowering trees we planted inside the walled garden were the stunning Magnolia Stellata (featured in the picture above and star plant below) with their heavenly fresh white flowers that light up like stars in March.

STAR PLANT OF THE MONTH
Magnolia Stellata
Commonly known as Star Magnolia
One of the most favoured for small gardens and pots for its trouble free, compact slow growing habit, and its showy white or pink flowers in early spring. We planted two inside the south side of the walled garden about 8 years ago, and my goodness they put on a show! Once established they can tolerate some dry ground, provided it has been topped with some wood chippings to help hold in a little moisture during the summer. You can buy it here.
