Dear friend,
If currentIy had one wish, it would be to have an extra week added to April because when I look back on pictures that I’ve taken at the beginning and the end of the month it never fails to amaze me how rapidly the garden has greened up! I can literally head out every morning for a wander through the garden and find something new appearing. It gives me butterflies just thinking about it now!
Amongst many plants I look forward to seeing, there’s one that I planted en masse about 11 years ago, that now produces an amazing sea of Narcissus ‘Thalia’ that sits at the foot of our Lime Avenue, creating quite a show around mid April.
Well the countdown has officially begun for our Open Garden Event at the end of this month! Excited? Yes.. nervous? Absolutely! Will the garden be ready? With of lots of lists and weekly help from Hannah and Rowan, I’m feeling quietly confident that it will be. Frustratingly, the mild and warm weather has meant that the tulips are already starting to come up, some are even flowering! I’m praying that most of them will still be in flower when we open the garden. Otherwise, fear not, there will be plenty to see and enjoy, with some delicious home-made teas supplied and served by our local church. There will be plant sales too. STAR PLANT OF THE MONTH
Brunnera Macrophylla
Commonly known as Jack Frost
If you have a shady nook and want to delicately brighten it up during April and May, then this sweet plant is for you. It has unusual and striking Snow White and green veined leaves, and sprays of tiny blue forget-me-not like flowers on long fine stems. We have a few in our woodland, and it is a perfect ground cover plant, that also works well in a pot too. It does prefer some moisture while it establishes, however once it’s happy it will tolerate drier conditions, a real must have for any garden! You can buy it here.
